Tech­ni­sche Infor­ma­ti­ons­bi­blio­thek (TIB) - Pro­gram Area C, Rese­arch and Devel­op­ment

TIB, being part of the Leib­niz Rese­arch Asso­ci­ation, is with around 600 employ­ees one of the lar­gest tech­nical inform­a­tion cen­tres in Ger­many, hav­ing three main func­tions:
1. Act­ing in the capa­city of the Leib­niz Inform­a­tion Centre for Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy, our for­ward-look­ing ser­vices secure the infra­struc­tural require­ments for pro­vid­ing rese­arch­ers in sci­ence and indus­try with high-qual­ity inform­a­tion and lit­er­at­ure.
2. Car­ry­ing out cut­ting edge rese­arch to fur­ther expand TIB’s role as a Ger­man inform­a­tion centre for the digit­isa­tion of sci­ence and tech­no­logy.
3. Offer lib­rary ser­vices for the Leib­niz Uni­ver­sity Han­nover.

Your chal­lenge
The suc­cess­ful app­lic­ant will sup­port the soft­ware devel­op­ment and app­lied rese­arch activ­it­ies around eDoer, an open, Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence dri­ven, per­son­al­ised learn­ing envir­on­ment. The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate will be a mem­ber of an inter­na­tio­nal team work­ing on the new pro­ject: “Know­ledge Graph der Data Lit­er­acy Alli­ance (Dalia) für FAIRe Daten­nut­zung und -bereit­s­tel­lung auf der Basis von Seman­tic Web Tech­no­lo­gie” fun­ded by the Ger­man Fed­eral Min­istry of Edu­ca­tion and Rese­arch (BMBF) and with a spe­cial focus on the them­atic area of rese­arch data man­age­ment. Wit­hin this pro­ject TIB will coo­per­ate with a num­ber of lead­ing Ger­man insti­tu­tions, like RWTH Aachen or TU Darm­stadt. DALIA will fur­ther deve­lop the eDoer plat­form into a col­lab­or­at­ive digi­tal train­ing sup­port sys­tem.

This rese­arch soft­ware engin­eer role inclu­des (but is not lim­ited to) front-end and back-end devel­op­ment (full­stack) and visu­al­ising per­son­al­ized learn­ing paths and skill require­ments. Besi­des that the suc­cess­ful app­lic­ant will also need to sup­port the co-design of empir­ical stud­ies tog­e­ther with doc­toral rese­arch­ers at TIB and other part­ner organ­iz­a­tions. If inter­ested, this work can be poten­tially pub­lished and pre­sen­ted in peer-reviewed rese­arch journ­als and con­fer­ences. If you are inter­ested, this pos­i­tion can also be upgraded to a PhD pro­ject.


Your qual­it­ies
Your com­pet­ence area should be rooted in the area of Tech­no­logy Enhanced Learn­ing or a related field (com­puter sci­ence and data sci­ence). You should be able to think cre­at­ively, have solid tech­nical skills in soft­ware devel­op­ment, grasp new know­ledge quickly, be able to com­bine abstract reas­on­ing with con­crete prob­lem solv­ing skills and be inter­ested in tack­ling com­plex chal­lenges.

The fol­low­ing qual­i­fic­a­tions are man­dat­ory
  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter’s degree or com­par­able) in a rel­ev­ant field of study such as com­puter sci­ence, data sci­ence or a com­par­able field.
  • Excel­lent com­mand of both writ­ten and spoken Ger­man and Eng­lish.
  • Pro­fi­ciency in the fol­low­ing tech­no­lo­gies:
  • Machine Learn­ing (espe­cially Text Min­ing and Deep Learn­ing meth­ods)
  • Stat­ist­ics
  • Ver­sion-con­trol sys­tems (Git)
  • Python pro­gram­ming
  • Well-developed ana­lyt­ical skills, cre­ativ­ity, pre­ci­sion and per­sever­ance.
  • Abil­ity to work both in a team and inde­pend­ently.
  • Will­ing­ness to go on busi­ness trips.

The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited until 31st Octo­ber 2025 with envi­sio­ned exten­sion. The reg­u­lar wee­kly work­ing time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The pos­i­tion is suit­able for part-time work only to a lim­ited extent. The remu­ner­a­tion is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

There is a close coo­per­a­tion with the L3S Rese­arch Centre at Leib­niz Uni­ver­sity Han­nover, one of the world's lead­ing rese­arch insti­tutes in the field of Web & Data Sci­ence, wit­hin the Leib­niz Joint Lab Data Sci­ence & Open Know­ledge. The Learn­ing and Skill Ana­lyt­ics Group focu­ses its activ­it­ies on top­ics, which are fun­da­men­tal to under­stand learn­ing and edu­ca­tio­nal pro­ces­ses in the 21st cen­tury. These top­ics are:

  • The use of intel­li­gent tech­no­lo­gies and novel, often­times large (big) data­sets to enhance the qual­ity of learn­ing and edu­ca­tion;
  • Exper­i­ment­ing with novel tools and meth­ods in the area of Learn­ing Ana­lyt­ics;
  • Under­stand­ing the impact of 21st cen­tury skills on edu­ca­tio­nal pro­ces­ses;
  • Pro­mot­ing high levels of eth­ics and pri­vacy, tog­e­ther with open­ness and trans­par­ency when it comes to the use of indi­vidual data about learn­ing and edu­ca­tion;
  • Under­stand­ing the trans­ition of indi­vidu­als bet­ween edu­ca­tion and other sec­tors of soci­ety, like the labour mar­ket.
